Posted - 24/03/2004 : 17:37:04 Having beaten Portishead on their own turf over Christmas, it was the turn of the Welsh to put one over their English neighbours Nailsea at the Grove de Stad. Nailsea started the game going up the slope with the gale force wind behind their backs, but it was their Portsihead counterparts who started the brighter playing into the wind and keeping hold of the ball effectively. They broke down the Nailsea midfield and backline by getting down the line behind the defence on a couple of occasions, and some slack tackling allowed their winger to get to the goal line before his drag-back to Matt Brynwyth resulted in the winger planting the ball home, and Nailsea were guilty of some woeful marking and not for the first time.
Unbelievably the early goal did not kick-start Nailsea and the Portishead midfield of Senior and Delyth were certainly getting the better of Nailsea, and some atrocious tackling from Nailsea led to a Portishead counter and a tame shot from Huelwyn somehow beat the keeper with very little pace. Nailsea did wake at this point and managed to construct a few attacks, but on a day when the Posset keeper found himself on top of his game to save bravely from a Vickers strike.
Nailsea went in for half-time, but unfortunately the manager only had 3 subs seeing as half a dozen warranted the drag. The lively Buxton came on from off the bench and the match resumed play.
The home team finally started to play the football we are accustomed to, and the second half partnership of Mark and Vickers served to disjoint the Welsh defence. By this point the Nailsea engine room was working overtime with Sayers, Buxton and the powerful Ridge now getting the better of the opposition, and the defence of Roberts, Taylor and Wring as effective as ever, but Nailsea failed to find the creativity to break down the Portishead defence. The final 10 minutes saw some fine wing play from Parsons providing crosses on occasions, but the same couldn't be said about the right flank, and Nailsea failed to break the net when both Mark and Vickers had fine efforts saved by the inform Posset custodian.
On the day, the better team won.
A mid-weeker at Frome Town this week for Nailsea United to get back on track. Things must improve.
Nailsea Utd 0, Portishead 2.

Posted - 26/03/2004 : 12:03:43 True... but the referee did ruin the game last night. I thought Liverpool started really well... and then Biscan decided he wanted Marlet's shorts and he waited until he got into the box to fall over!
Im disappointed we were knocked out by an arrogant French side but maybe that is the end of our arrogant French manager!
Spurs are poo!!! |

Biscan is rubbish!

Posted - 26/03/2004 : 11:04:56 Congresbury don't need to rely on the new system to keep them up. The management are doing are great job with their young starlets and we are picking up points at a vital time. |

Posted - 26/03/2004 : 10:07:23 So basically, you're trying to say Congresbury would liked to have known what they had to do to escape the drop two years running. Last year you stayed up because Clevedon Utd went to the Screwfix and the knock-on effect was that you didn't go down, and this year you wanted to know at the beginning of the season if second from bottom wouldn't relegate you ?! - positive thinking from your clan Jungle!
But seriously, the reason they do not know, is because of the Pyramid system we have inplace in the English FA, relies on facilities etc being upto a specific standard. For example: if the screwfix requires 6 teams, they will look to the Somerset and Gloucester County leagues. The 6 teams will need to have applied to the Screwfix and have the correct facilities. If there are more than 6 teams that qualify it goes on a priority/positioning basis. Therefore 1 could come from the Somerset and 5 from Gloucester or vice-versa, it all depends on where the teams that have applied have finish.
This obviously effects how many go up and down in all the Somerset divisions, and how many divisions there will be.
There is also talk of a Somerset North and South division split to cut down on travelling expenses for teams like Watchet !

Posted - 25/03/2004 : 22:41:33 Its a bit of a strange end of season run-in all round, as basically no team in the entire league knows what division they'll be in next year, or what position they need to come to go up/stay up. This all seems a bit of a f**k up by the league/fa really, it should have been made clear at the start of the season what was going on.

Posted - 25/03/2004 : 16:37:47 Hmmm, the 4-1 defeat at the Grove last season. 2-0 down, 3-1 down, one keeper OFF, one captain OFF, Dog goes in goal, 4-1 down, full-time, the ref gets a taxi back to Portishead!
Mind you, when is anyone satisfied with the officials? Those sending offs seemed to set the president for the Cup Final, where we had the same ref and a further 3 red cards!
Unbelievably, your closest contenders this year are Radstock.... Radstock?!!! The rest of the league should be ashamed.
In answer to your question about why we are struggling, we lost 12pts due to Clevedon Utd going up and Nailsea Town going down!

Posted - 25/03/2004 : 16:23:30 Worse of the 3 local prem teams last season by a country mile and they played on the best pitch in the league week in week out, goes to show the strength of the screwfix div 1 at the moment that they're not rock bottom. Its a loss of two perfectly satisfying victories in my book...
Now we have to rely on the nailsea derby, one of which can swing either way depending on the attitudes of the players on the day..one coming up in a week or so i believe, last time we went to the grove we picked up a 4-1 win against the odds in what was a great performance. We are strong this season though, great at the back, for me the best midfield in the league, and have punch upfront..i agree with piers, we can only lose this title but the pitch we play on aint helping matters!!! |

Posted - 25/03/2004 : 16:00:55 Out of about 35 first & reserve team players we have lost about half since last season.
It's currently a time of transformation within the club, with some older heads going out and some younger ones coming in. Some players left having been guarnanteed starts from other clubs, such as Cleeve West Town, Winscombe, Yatton Athletic and Congresbury, while a few tried their hands at a higher standard. In addition to this 3 have left mid-season to go travelling with the thai-boys/girls.
On the flip side we have had some quality players come through the junior ranks this season, and have signed a couple of Nailsea lads from higher standards, but it seems like this transaction wasn't as straight as previously thought.
Does anyone have anything to say about Clevedon United? Who knows, with the new league restructure the old foes may be playing each other again next year ?!

Posted - 25/03/2004 : 15:39:53 As a "supporter" of local football it is good to see the fans of two local sides getting on so well.
From a Clevedon, sorry i mean neutral perspective i think Nailseas poor start to the season has cost them this year. Failing to replace keeper Mark Cremer until 5 or 6 games into the season has undoubtedly cost Nailsea 12 or so points. Nailsea are always capable of putting a string of results together, and on their day can beat any side in the league, however they need to show more consistency which won them the league last season.
Nailsea Utd Reserves seem to be going through a transitional period this season, bringing in youth which will undoubtedly come to fruition in the next 5 years. Again they have suffered with consistency much like the first team.
Now for Portisead...In previous years, ever since i have been writing for the Clevedon Mercury they have always been there or thereabouts when the honours get handed out at the end of a season, and this year they should take the title. It would take a massive slip in form for them not to pick up this seasons title. I am dissapointed to see that Portishead have moved pitches onto a cabbage patch in order to gain Screwfix football, but i guess if thats what it takes, then it needs to be done.
Now i've had my say i will let you two sets of fans continue your discussions about local football.
Read last weekends football reports in tonights edition of the Clevedon Mercury. |

Posted - 25/03/2004 : 15:38:40 Cheers. Having hardly seen any games last season its hard for me to say what Nailsea have been lacking this year that they had the year before. I've seen some great Nailsea performances this year, and on their day I think they could beat any team in the division, but theyve failed to produce the goods consistently enough. Theres been too many games where theyve failed to get started, panicked when put under pressure and conceded some really sloppy goals, and then not had enough direction to get back in the match. Theres a lot of young players in the team, but maybe a lack of people to look to for encouragement and inspiration during the more lacklustre games... Anyway the more regualr supporters/players will be able to answer this question better than me!
Nailsea have got lots of good, young players though (another 16-yr-old made his debut and scored last week), and the team will only get better. Im confident they'll back to winning (and stuffing Portishead) ways soon!

Posted - 25/03/2004 : 14:23:40 Start some then! I wish someone would... I was looking forward to when supporters from other Somerset teams starting coming on here, I thought we would start having some decent conversations about local football, as there seems to be a lack of it elsewhere on the internet - but this rubbish!
