I've got plastic ones, Al, as they say. I've even built a little house for three of them to live on our balcony. The other three will live inside, and hopefully ferment a good bit quicker. (As someone with no kids), it's like waiting for the stork to come.

Off to decorate the nursery.......

(Will keep you all updated on progress, and will try to remember camera for our pressing weekend.)

Six barrels? How ever much are you planning to make?

Are you the only person storing it?

We're pressing a tonne of apples, Al, and hoping to get around 100 gallons of juice out of that. Everyone is taking their share of the juice to their own homes and making the cider there.

Me and Mrs Ivanhoe are making 30 gallons, hence the need for a lot of barrel space. I don't think it's that much, 30 gallons. Do you? You'll make me feel like an alcaholic if you're not careful (which, I realise, would be odd, because you ARE Al Caholic). I've worked out that it's a long way off lasting us for a whole year, so I'm already worrying about not making enough. But don't worry: if it's any good we'll put a few pints by for you lads to try.

30 GALLONS????? Thats fantastic!!! I only managed a paltry 12 gallons and an extra one for Gents before I ran out of storage space.

If however Mrs I is also a zider lover then you have half the battle won. My other half does not partake despite being a proper zummerzet local and was none too keen on filling our kitchen and/or spare bedrooms with fermenting barrels, spoilsport!

Al, you know your other half loves it when I'm there drinkin Hecks - she just doesn't want to admit it. I'm sure she's a proper zider lover really.

Mrs I is indeed a zider lover. She is very happy to go on trips round cider farms (and do at least her share of the driving), and she was working like a trojan (not the condom or the Brad Pitt type - you know what I mean) all weekend to get our apples pressed.

My only worry is that she might drink it all before I get round to it!!

Ive given up on my demijohn, i racked off the juice into a clean container this weekend to try and get it going again, and have put it in the warmest place in the house... but nothing is happening at all.

The juice tasted really good all the same, i may just drink it! Does anyone know the position with drinking slightly fermented apple juice?!?

I know this sounds daft, but are you sure that the seal is good and tight? You might try some vaseline around the edges for some extra security, if it's threaded, screw it right down, if it's a bung, make sure it's pushed in really hard.

And you will know us by the trail of empties....

Im not sure if i know what you mean... ive been using an airlock on the demijohn, i thought you had to use one of these while you are trying to ferment otherwise the bottles explodes if you seal it up!?

Think Tharg might mean (only guessing, but it's a thing we discussed recently on our site) that if there's only a little bit of CO2 coming off, and if the seal (between any two of the cork, the airlock, and the demijohn) isn't tight, then the CO2 might not be exiting via the airlock and so there's no sign of bubbling (even though it is slowly bubbling, but the Co2 is getting out via the bad seal rather than the airlock).

Sorry to hear your sad news. Will have a memorial glass of Brains (cider, not welsh beer) and play some Wurzels when I get home tonight, in memory of your unborn cider.

Ah i see what you mean, i'll have a check tonight and maybe try a new bung, but even when i take the airlock off and look in the demijohn there doesnt seem to be much bubbles or action.

I just don't think the temperature has been steady enough in my house and things went wrong from the start... When i first put some yeast in a few sundays ago the fermentation went crazy during the next day when the house was really warm and was bubbling away nicely when i went to bed, but when i woke up tuesday it had almost completely ceased, just a few small bubbles frothing away. Im sure it has something to do with the house being boiling in the day and freezing at night. Its freezing most of the time now cos the boiler has packed up so i don't hold out much hope of it started again.

Oh well at least it was only 1 gallon and i'll just have to try and steal a pint off Al Caholic when his is ready.

Thanks for the memorial, i think i will raise a sad glass too. In fact, can everyone have a personal minutes silence when they read this please?......................................................

Sorry if I was a bit obscure, that was exactly what I meant - cheers Ivanhoe - make sure the CO2 isn't escaping elsewhere, it might still be working.
